Running a charity is all about connecting with people whether it’s through donations, volunteer work, or spreading awareness about your cause. But how do you keep your supporters in the loop and keep them coming back for more? The answer might be simpler than you think: start a blog!

It might sound like something only influencers do, but I promise, a blog can be a game-changer for your charity.

It helps you stay visible, build trust, and keep your cause front and centre. And in a time when charitable giving in the UK is declining, we need every tool we can get.

💡 Only 50% of people donated to charity in 2024, down from 58% in 2019—equating to 4 million fewer donors over five years (CAF, 2024).

Blogging won’t magically fix that, but it can help you stand out, build community, and turn passive visitors into loyal supporters.

Here's why blogging should be part of your charity's strategy and how you can get started today.

1. A Blog Builds Your Charity’s Voice

One of the best things about having a blog is that it lets your charity develop its unique voice. You can tell your story, share what matters to you, and showcase your values in a way that feels personal and authentic.

This helps you connect with your audience on a deeper level. People are more likely to support a cause they feel personally connected to. A blog gives them a chance to see the heart of your charity, how you’re making an impact, and why they should care.

2. It Drives Traffic to Your Website

So, you’ve built a beautiful charity website, (maybe with some help me from me? 😉) But are people actually finding it?

Every blog post you publish creates fresh content for Google to index, improving your search visibility. The more relevant content you have, the more likely people are to find you when they search for causes like yours.

💡The National Trust saw a 21% year-on-year increase in web traffic in 2023, with 2.3 million organic search visits per month (Civil Society, 2024). Their site isn’t just a brochure, it’s a content hub.

Pro tip: Share your blog posts in newsletters and across your social channels to drive even more traffic back to your site.

3. It Boosts Your Credibility and Authority

Your charity has specialist knowledge, lived experience, and insights your supporters care about. Sharing that through blog posts helps position your organisation as a credible, trusted voice in your field.

Whether you're answering common questions, explaining why your work matters, or giving practical fundraising advice you're adding value. And value builds trust.

💡In 2024, 54% of charities said building an online presence was vital—but many struggle with the know-how or resources to do it well (VONNE Charity Digital Skills Report).

Blogging is a simple, cost-effective way to build that presence without relying on pricy paid ads.

4. A Blog Engages and Retains Your Supporters

A blog isn’t just a tool to keep people informed it’s a way to engage and build a community. Regularly publishing fresh, relevant content helps keep your charity top of mind. Your supporters are more likely to return to your website for new posts, and they’ll also have opportunities to interact with your charity by leaving comments, sharing posts, or subscribing to your newsletter.

Consider it a conversation with your audience. The more they engage, the more likely they are to contribute to your cause, whether it’s through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word.

5. It’s a Cost-Effective Marketing Tool

Charities aren’t exactly rolling in marketing budgets (understatement of the year). But blogging? Blogging costs nothing but a bit of time and brainpower.

💡Despite a 23% increase in digital ad spend in 2024, online fundraising returns across UK and Irish charities remained flat (Rally, 2024).

So while paid ads have their place, use your blog to work smarter, not spend harder.

How to Start Your Charity Blog

Now that you know why you need a blog, let’s talk about how to start one. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to getting your charity’s blog up and running:

  1. Choose Your Platform: Most charity websites (like the ones I build!) are hosted on platforms like Squarespace or WordPress. Both of these offer easy-to-use blogging tools that allow you to create posts without needing to know any code. Choose one that suits your needs.

  2. Pick Your Topics: Start by brainstorming topics that are relevant to your charity. What are your supporters most interested in? What are the key issues your charity addresses? Consider writing about:

    • Success stories from your projects

    • Interviews with staff or volunteers

    • Fundraising tips or challenges

    • Updates on your campaigns or events

    • Thought leadership pieces on the issues you’re tackling

  3. Write Your First Post: Don’t overthink it! Your first post doesn’t need to be a masterpiece. It just needs to introduce your charity, share your mission, and explain why your blog exists. Make it personal, inviting, and full of passion for your cause.

  4. Consistency is Key: Aim to publish a blog post at least once a month, or more if you can manage it. The more consistent you are, the better your chances of building a dedicated audience.

  5. Promote Your Blog: Once your post is live, share it! Share it on social media, include it in your email newsletters, and ask supporters to share it with their networks. The more you promote your blog, the more people will see it.

  6. Track What's Working: Use tools like Google Analytics to see how your blog is performing. Are people reading your posts? Are they engaging with your content? This will help you refine your approach and create posts that resonate with your audience.
